Outcast: An Upcycled Food Revolution

There is no time to waste — Upcycled food is leading the convoy on a food revolution and our plan-based, sustainable technology is driving the eco-friendly bus. Our mission is to rescue ugly produce, tun it into beautiful food and save the planet.

Hundreds of millions of tons of produce end up in landfills every year and as those precious fruits and vegetables rot away, they create methane gas that contributes to the ongoing menace that is climate change. So, how do we rethink food waste and start a food revolution?

It starts at a few different levels:

  1. In the grocery store and farmers markets
  2. Food production
  3. Upcycling

Upcycling: Produce Picks

When we wander the produce section, we are met with glistening apples, perfect celery stalks and green, lush bunches of broccoli. Since when did we decide everything had to be perfect? Just because a pear is not exactly pear-shaped and that tomato isn’t perfectly round doesn’t mean it’s any less perfect than the pretty ones. Try rethinking your produce and pick that weirdo carrot or that awkward potato! Farmer’s markets are a great place to find weird fruits and vegetables, they do not discriminate, if its edible it’s sellable!

You can make these tiny actions into big meaningful change and contribute to a more sustainable produce industry. If not, fine, more for us to make plant-based protein powder, super greens and vegan vitamins!

Food Production: Pulp, Carrot Castoffs and More!

Food producers are the farmers but they are also the producers of packaged goods. Think about a baby carrot, or that cold-pressed juice: Where do the carrot shavings go? How about all that pulp from the juice? This is where Outcast can really lend an environmentally friendly hand. We work with companies like Nestle, Happy Planet and Greenhouse Juice to take the waste off their hands and turn it into upcycled foods and supplements.

What is Upcycling?

Upcycling food is as simple as using ingredients that otherwise would not have gone to human consumption. Ugly or unsellable fruits and vegetables are procured and produced using verifiable supply chains and have a positive impact on the environment. Outcast uses our patented-pending technology to create micronutrient-rich protein shakes, super greens and supplements that are vegan, gluten-free and full of flavour. It’s a win-win for us but it’s a win-win for you too! Use products that are committed to creating a more sustainable food future and help you rethink how you consume and view food.
