HALIFAX, NS / TORONTO, ON –June 16, 2021 – Outcast Foods, a Canadian food technology company that rescues cast off produce and upcycles it into supplements and other ingredients, has hired Miriam Zitner as Vice President, Business Development. She will help lead the company’s North American expansion and help Outcast scale its unique plant-based technology, integral to the emerging and quickly expanding new category of upcycled consumer products.
“With approximately one third of the world’s annual food production wasted or lost, resulting in 3.3 billion tonnes of GHG emissions, Outcast is on a mission to create a healthier planet with zero food waste,” says Darren Burke, CEO. “Miriam will play a key role as Outcast continues to refine its processes and expand its reach with a team of passionate and engaged employees excited about building a global company with significant social, environmental and economic impact.”
Outcast has developed a first-of-its kind intellectual property that transforms waste stream food into high purity, nutrient dense, long shelf-life natural health products. The company is using its $10M Series A financing to invest in R&D, expand its manufacturing capabilities and recruit top talent. Its expansion also includes the growth of its Dartmouth, NS, facility from 3,500 square feet to 12,000 square feet and construction is underway on its 45,000 square foot manufacturing and distribution facility in Burlington, ON - a plant that will be the world’s first, purpose-built facility dedicated to upcycling the many different types of waste stream food. These processing plant expansions will help Outcast divert more than 10,000,000 pounds per year of food from going to waste and meet the need for increased production, fulfillment and product development.
Zitner comments, “I’ve admired the ingenuity of Outcast since first learning about the company. This is an industry growing in significance daily, as the consumer continues to make lifestyle shifts, both from a diet and a values-based perspective. I am looking forward to working with the Outcast team to find innovative and strategic opportunities to drive growth for the company.”
Zitner is one of several strategic hires who have joined the team over the past two months. Darren Marchand joined as Vice President of Operations and Zachary Farrar has been hired as Vice President of Product Development and Regulatory Affairs.
About Miriam Zitner Miriam’s background working with technology companies of all sizes, academic institutions, governments, professional service firms and more, position her to drive Outcast’s innovation agenda across networks while identifying new opportunities to create growth and transformation.
